Alternative Formats

Eligibility for this service is determined by the Disability Access Services (DAS) Director and is based in part on the professional documentation provided by the student.
  1. When you enter your schedule online at DAS Online Services, make sure you check an ?ENL? for Enlarged material, a ?B? for books on tape, ?ETX? for E-text, ?BRL? for scanning and Braille material beside each class the alternate format is needed. Select only one.
  2. Students requesting materials in alternate format must own a physical copy of the textbook(s) or other course material, or obtain said materials before the alternate format will be distributed. The student must submit proof of purchase for a given textbook in order to have it put into an alternative format.
  3. Requests for materials in Alternate Formats will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Once a request is made, preference will be given to the format specified by the student. However, the recommendation of DAS professionals will be used in determining the specific media format for each academic course.
  4. Alternative Formats will convert all required textbooks for a given class. Should the student need course notes, optional readings, or handouts converted, he or she must make this request separately to das.production@oregonstate.edu or by written request. If the student plans on using alternate media for mathematics texts, the student must make an appointment with an Alternative Formats coordinator.
  5. Alternate Formats requests must be submitted as soon as the student registers for classes. Late requests will be processed according to the timeline outlined below.
  6. Alternative Formats works in conjunction with the Oregon State Bookstore in acquiring textbooks to convert onto books on tape. As DAS must wait for the books to arrive on the shelves, the student may purchase a textbook from an alternate source and loan it to Alternative Formats to receive his or her tapes more efficiently. The book will be returned to the student as soon as possible. The binding will not be cut.
  7. When creating electronic formats, Braille scanning or enlargement from textbooks, the book bindings will be cut off. A spiral binding will replace the original binding before the book is returned to the student. If the student is unwilling to have the binding cut off a textbook, Oregon State University may not be able to provide alternate media accommodations. (Bookstore will repurchase book when binding has been cut if you purchased from bookstore.)
  8. If a student makes a request after a class begins, the student must bring in a copy of the syllabus to Alternative Formats for the class in which he or she is requesting alternate media. This must be done by the end of the first week of the term.
  9. The student should notify Alternative Formats, immediately, if a course is dropped.
  10. Students will be provided with one Alternate Formats copy for each material required for academic use. This electronic file is copyrighted and may not be reproduced or distributed in a format other than a specialized format exclusively for use by persons with disabilities. Any further reproduction or distribution in a format other than a specialized format may result in disciplinary action by Oregon State University.
  11. If a student repeatedly requests alternative format and does not pick up the requested materials, the Alternative Formats Coordinator may suspend services. The student will need to meet with the Alternative Formats Coordinator to have services reinstated.
  12. Student(s) having questions regarding alternative formats media should contact the Alternative Formats Coordinator at (541) 737 - 4098 or Alt.Formats@oregonstate.edu.
  13. Please remember to return all tapes no later than the last day of the term. IF ANY TAPES/CDs ARE MISSING YOU WILL BE CHARGED $10 per CD
